Description

This lesson helps participants understand how important it is to have unity in the Body of Christ.

Scriptures

John 13:34-35; 17:20-23

Romans 15:5-6

Ephesians 4:1-6, 4:9-12, 4:25-32

Hebrews 10:23-25

Materials

Paper currency (enough bills so that you have one for every three or four participants and one for yourself – NOTE: you are going to have them tear the money into smaller pieces. If this is considered disrespectful or illegal in your country, you may want to use pictures of currency instead of the real thing. For that matter, you may not want to see your hard-earned cash being torn into pieces. Feel free to substitute.)

Clear tape (like the kind for wrapping presents. Enough for each group of three or four participants to have a roll and one for yourself.)

Optional – a flipchart or whiteboard and markers

Bible

Preparation

Write the Scriptures on slips of paper (one per slip) so that you can hand them out to participants.

Before you begin teaching, hand out the slips of paper to different participants, who brought their Bibles.

Practice the script.

Procedure

Use the following script and instructions (or modify to suit your needs):

“Today is your lucky day!”

“I’ve got extra money, and I would like to share it with you!”

“But first, I need to put you into groups.”

“I want everyone to line up single-file in the order of how many pets you have ever owned.” (Or you can choose a different sorting technique.)

“I want the person who has owned the most on this side of the room, and the person who has owned the least on this side of the room. (Gesture to either side of the room as you give these instructions. It doesn’t matter which side you choose for most or least.)

“Everyone else will line up between those two people in the order of the number of pets you’ve owned.”

“Any questions?” (Answer questions.) “GO!”

“Okay, now we need to see how many pets you’ve had and what kinds.” (Go down the line and ask each person how many and what kind of pets they owned. If anyone is in the wrong place based on number of pets, move them to the right place in the line.)

“Okay, now I need to put you into small teams to receive your money.”

“I am going to number you off – one to ___.” (You will want three to four people in each group, so count the total number of participants, and divide that number by either three or four. This will tell you how high they need to count off. For example, if you have 24 people and want to divide them into groups of four, 24/4=6. You would have them number off one to six, and that would give you six groups of four people each. Once you’ve told them how high to count, number them off.)

“Now, I want all the ‘ones’ to get together and all the ‘twos’ to get together.” (Do the same with each number group.)

“Great job! Now here is your money! Congratulations!” (Hand out one bill of currency to each group.)

“I know, I know…we’ve got a small problem.”

“I only gave each group one bill, but there are three (or four) of you.”

“Don’t worry; I have a solution!”

“I want the person who has the money in each group to tear it into three (or four) equal pieces and hand them out to all the team members.” (Encourage them to do this. They may be reluctant. If so, convince them you are serious by demonstrating with a bill at the front of the room. Keep encouraging them until every team has torn the bill and shared it equally.)

“There! Isn’t that great? Everyone happy?” (Participants will most likely not be too happy and will tell you so. Act as if you can’t understand why they wouldn’t like your solution.)

“What’s wrong? I just gave you free money! You should be happy!” (Listen to their feedback.)

“Oh, so you’re saying that the money isn’t worth anything when it’s torn up like that?” (Listen to responses.)

“You’re saying that the money is more effective at what it does when it is all together?” (Listen to responses.)

“That’s really interesting! And it reminds me of something I’ve read in the Bible.” (Ask everyone to take a seat with his or her groups. Then, have a volunteer read John 17:20-23.)

“This is Jesus’ prayer the night before He died on the cross.”

“It’s probably a very important prayer if it’s one of the last ones that He prayed.”

“Why do you think He prayed for ‘complete unity’ between the believers and with God?” (There could be many answers, but one will be so that the world will know that God sent Jesus and loved the believers just as He loved Jesus, His Son.)

“That’s not all the Scriptures say about unity between the believers.” (Have a volunteer read Romans 15:5-6.)

“What is Paul saying about unity to the Romans?” (Answers may include that it enables us to glorify God with one heart and mouth. Have a volunteer read Ephesians 4:9-12.)

“What do you think Paul is saying in this Scripture about unity?” (Listen to responses. A main idea that you want to bring out is that being alone isn’t good. We need others to help us when we get into trouble.)

“If Jesus and Paul feel the need to pray for the believers and encourage them to keep unity, it probably isn’t so easy to do.”

“What do you think gets in the way of unity among believers?” (Answers might include differences of opinion, different denominations, differences of beliefs, jealousy, unforgiveness, lack of time, distance, etc… You may want to put these on a flipchart or whiteboard. I recommend drawing a line down the middle of the space and writing a minus sign at the top of the left column and a plus sign at the top of the right column.)

“That’s quite a list, and I think it would definitely break the unity of a group of believers.”

“Unity is hard. Human nature (our sinful nature) leads us to want to divide rather than do the hard work to stay together.”

“There’s an old saying: ‘People like people who are like them.’”

“This means that we are drawn to people who look the same, act the same, have the same opinions, have the same backgrounds, etc.”

“It’s easier to keep relationships with these people, because we have so much in common.”

“If I had let you make your own groups earlier, you probably would have divided up based on ‘dog people’ and ‘cat people’ and ‘fish people’ and ‘hamster people,’ and all of you would have thought that you were better than the other groups. Am I right?”

“But when people are different than us in the way they look or act or think…, we have to work hard to keep the relationships strong.”

“In fact, we might have to make some changes in our own lives in order to keep the relationship together.”

“So, let’s make a list of things we can do or the changes we can make to preserve or build unity.” (Have a volunteer read John 13:34-35.)

“What’s the ingredient this Scripture mentions that we need to have for unity?” (Answer should be ‘love.’ . If you are using the flipchart or whiteboard, write these down on the “plus” side. Have a volunteer read Hebrews 10:23-25.)

“What ingredient does this Scripture mention?” (Answers should include ‘meeting together’ and ‘encourage one another.’ Have a volunteer read Ephesians 4:1-6.)

“What ingredients does Paul mention in this Scripture?” (Answers should include ‘humility,’ ‘gentleness,’ ‘patience’ and ‘bearing with one another in love.’ Have a volunteer read Ephesians 4:25-32.)

“Last one. What is Paul telling the Ephesians to do in this Scripture in order to preserve unity?” (Answers should include ‘put off falsehood’ (or ‘be honest with each other’), ‘speak truthfully,’ ‘be angry sometimes but don’t sin by holding onto your anger,’ ‘do not steal from each other,’ ‘do your share of the work,’ ‘share with those in need,’ ‘don’t gossip, spread rumors or criticize,’ ‘build others up,’ ‘get rid of bitterness, rage, anger, fighting, slander (or ’saying bad things about others’), and any kind of bad feelings for others,’ ‘be kind and compassionate,” and ‘forgive each other.’)

“Look at all the things we need to do to keep our unity!”

“How are we ever going to be successful at all this stuff?”

“The good news is, we don’t have to do it by ourselves.”

“In truth, we are a lot like the money you have in your hands.”

“It doesn’t have any power in itself to put itself back together. Neither do we.”

“But we do have a power given to us by the Holy Spirit.” (Bring out some of the tape, and use it to tape back together the bill that you tore earlier.)

“The Holy Spirit is a little like this tape.”

“He has the power to bring us back together.”

“All we have to do is surrender to God’s will and allow Him to mend us, to bring us back together.” (Pass out rolls of tape to each of the groups.)

“Are you willing to allow the Holy Spirit bring you back together?”

“Then tape that money back together.” (Give them a few moments to tape the money.)

“Now the money is powerful and effective again!”

“Know this: one of the Enemy’s favorite and most effective weapons against us is a strategy called ‘Divide and Conquer.’”

“The Scripture says that Satan is like a roaring lion watching for someone to devour.”

“If you have every watched Animal Planet, you probably know that lions don’t attack herds; they attack the animals that wander away from the herd.”

“They attack the weak ones, the sick ones, the lazy ones, the ones doing their own thing.”

“That’s because attacking the herd is dangerous; they could easily trample the lion or gore him or kick him in the head.”

“Satan wants to divide us from the herd – the rest of the Body of Christ – so that he can attack us and have a really good chance of taking us down.”

“Don’t give him the opportunity! Stick with the herd!”

“We are stronger and more powerful together!” (You can allow the participants to keep the money or you can collect it back. It might be interesting to encourage them to pool their money in order to increase its buying ‘power.’ Maybe they could buy something with it that would benefit everyone.)

Time

30 minutes
Description

This game teaches the Christmas story through the game of Bingo.

Scriptures

Matthew 1:18-25, 2:1-23

Luke 1:5-67, 2:1-20

Materials

Copies of the eight different bingo cards (See the filed called, “Christmas Story Bingo Cards” on the “Lesson and Material Downloads” page of www.teachthem.wordpress.com.) Each card has all the same pictures, but they have different placements. You can choose whether or not you reveal this information to the children.

Something to act as blotters. You can use coins, torn pieces of paper, poker chips… You will need enough for all the children to use. (I use candy and tell the kids that they get to keep the candy whenever they make a Bingo.)

Copy of the Christmas story at the end of this lesson.

Optional – Prizes for getting bingos.

Preparation

Practice the script.

Print copies of the eight different bingo cards.

Distribute them randomly to the children so that each child has one.

Procedure

Use the following script (or modify to suit your needs):

“We’re going to play a game to tell the story of Christmas.”

“Each of you has received a ‘Christmas Story’ bingo sheet. On it, you will see pictures that represent some of the events from the Christmas story.”

“I’m going to read the Christmas story out loud.”

“You have also received some blotters that you can use to put on the pictures as you hear me mention them in the story.”

“If you see a picture that represents something I mention in the story, put a blotter on top of that name.”

“The center space is marked, ‘G.R.A.C.E. Space.’ This one is free – like grace; you can put a blotter on it now. It’s to remind you of God’s grace to us. Grace is something that you get but didn’t earn, and the letters in the word stand for ‘God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.’”

“You see, we have all the wonderful blessings that God wants us to have, because Jesus paid for them on the cross. We have God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.”

“So, make sure you have a blotter on that center space, because it is already paid for.”

“Now, if you get five boxes in a row, in a column or in a diagonal marked, you have a bingo, and you should shout out, ‘BINGO!’”

“If you get a BINGO, you can keep playing and see how many BINGOs you can make.”

“Does anyone have any questions about how to play?” (Answer questions.)

“Okay, let’s play!” (Begin telling the story. Be sure to emphasize the picture words as you reach them. They are emphasized in the text below in bold and enlarged font. Several pictures will be mentioned more than once, so the kids have multiple chances of finding them. (However, the words are not emphasized in the text the second time they are mentioned.) All Scriptures are taken from The Message, because it is more lyrical. I’ve skipped some passages in order to shorten the game for children with shorter attention spans, and I’ve changed a few words to make them more understandable for young ears. Chapters and verses are noted, and both the books of Matthew and Luke are used in order to give a more complete picture of the story.)

(Optional Follow-Up: Ask the kids to take their Bingo cards home and to try to retell the story to their parents, siblings or friends using the pictures.)

THE CHRISTMAS STORY

Luke 1:5-67

A Childless Couple Becomes Pregnant

During the rule of Herod, King of Judea, there was a priest named Zachariah. His wife’s name was Elizabeth. Together they lived honorably before God, careful in keeping to the ways of the commandments and enjoying a clear conscience before God. But they were childless because Elizabeth could never have children, and now they were quite old.

It so happened that as Zachariah was carrying out his priestly duties before God, it came his one turn in life to enter the sanctuary of God and burn incense.

The congregation was gathered and praying outside the Temple at the hour of the incense offering. Unannounced, an angel of God appeared just to the right of the altar of incense. Zachariah was paralyzed in fear.

But the angel reassured him, “Don’t fear, Zachariah. Your prayer has been heard. Elizabeth, your wife, will bear a son by you. You are to name him John. You’re going to leap like a gazelle for joy, and not only you—many will delight in his birth. He’ll achieve great things for God.

“He’ll drink neither wine nor beer. He’ll be filled with the Holy Spirit from the moment he leaves his mother’s womb. He will turn many sons and daughters of Israel back to their God. He will announce God’s arrival in the style and strength of Elijah, soften the hearts of parents to children, and lead even hardened skeptics to believe—he’ll get the people ready for God.”

Zachariah said to the angel, “Do you expect me to believe this? I’m an old man and my wife is an old woman.”

But the angel said, “I am Gabriel, the messenger of God, sent especially to bring you this glad news. But because you won’t believe me, you’ll be unable to say a word until the day of your son’s birth. Every word I’ve spoken to you will come true in God’s time.”

Meanwhile, the congregation waiting for Zachariah was getting restless, wondering what was keeping him so long in the sanctuary. When he came out and couldn’t speak, they knew he had seen a vision. He continued speechless and had to use sign language with the people.

When the course of his priestly assignment was completed, he went back home. It wasn’t long before his wife, Elizabeth, became pregnant. She went off by herself for five months, relishing her pregnancy. “So, this is how God acts to remedy my unfortunate condition!” she said.

A Virgin Becomes Pregnant

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the Galilean village of Nazareth to a virgin engaged to be married to a man descended from David. His name was Joseph, and the virgin’s name, Mary. Upon entering, Gabriel greeted her:

“Good morning! You’re beautiful with God’s beauty, Beautiful inside and out! God be with you.”

Mary was thoroughly shaken, wondering what was behind a greeting like that. But the angel assured her, “Mary, you have nothing to fear. God has a surprise for you: You will become pregnant and give birth to a son and call his name Jesus.

“He will be great, be called ‘Son of the Highest.’ The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David; He will rule Jacob’s house forever— no end, ever, to his kingdom.”

Mary said to the angel, “But how? I’ve never had a husband.”

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, the power of the Highest hover over you; Therefore, the child you bring to birth will be called Holy, Son of God.

“And did you know that your cousin Elizabeth is going to give birth to a son, old as she is? Everyone called her barren, and here she is six months pregnant! Nothing, you see, is impossible with God.”

And Mary said, “Yes, I see it all now: I’m the Lord’s maid, ready to serve. Let it be with me just as you say.” Then the angel left her.

Mary didn’t waste a minute. She got up and traveled to a town in Judah in the hill country, straight to Zachariah’s house, and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby in her womb leaped. She was filled with the Holy Spirit, and sang out exuberantly…

Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months and then went back to her own home.

The Birth of John

When Elizabeth was full-term in her pregnancy, she bore a son. Her neighbors and relatives, seeing that God had overwhelmed her with mercy, celebrated with her.

On the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child and were calling him Zachariah after his father. But his mother intervened: “No. He is to be called John.”

“But,” they said, “no one in your family is named that.” They used sign language to ask Zachariah what he wanted him named.

Asking for a tablet, Zachariah wrote, “His name is to be John.” That took everyone by surprise. Surprise followed surprise—Zachariah’s mouth was now open, his tongue loose, and he was talking, praising God!

A deep, reverential fear settled over the neighborhood, and in all that Judean hill country people talked about nothing else. Everyone who heard about it took it to heart, wondering, “What will become of this child? Clearly, God has his hand in this.”

Then Zachariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied…

Matthew 1:18-25

Joseph’s Struggle

Before they were married, Joseph discovered that Mary was pregnant. (It was by the Holy Spirit, but he didn’t know that.) Joseph, embarrassed but noble, determined to take care of things quietly so Mary would not be disgraced.

While he was trying to figure a way out, he had a dream. God’s angel spoke in the dream: “Joseph, son of David, don’t hesitate to get married. Mary’s pregnancy is from the Holy Spirit-conceived. God’s Holy Spirit has made her pregnant. She will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus—’God saves’—because he will save his people from their sins.” This will fulfill what the prophet said:

‘Watch for this—a virgin will get pregnant and bear a son;

They will name him Immanuel (Hebrew for “God is with us”).’

Then Joseph woke up. He did exactly what God’s angel commanded in the dream: He married Mary. But they didn’t act like husband and wife until she had the baby. He named the baby Jesus.

Luke 2:1-20

The Birth of Jesus

About that time, Caesar Augustus ordered a census (count of the people) to be taken throughout the Empire. This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone had to travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for. So Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in Judah, David’s town, for the census. As a descendant of David, he had to go there. He went with Mary, his fiancée, who was pregnant.

While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room in the inn.

An Event for Everyone

There were shepherds camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.”

At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises: “Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.”

As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the shepherds talked it over. “Let’s get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us.”

They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the shepherds were impressed.

Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself. The shepherds returned and let loose, glorifying and praising the Lord for everything they had heard and seen. It turned out exactly the way they’d been told!

Matthew 2:1-23

Scholars from the East

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem village, a band of scholars (wise men) arrived in Jerusalem from the East. They asked around, “Where can we find and pay homage to the newborn King of the Jews? We observed a star in the eastern sky that signaled his birth. We’re on pilgrimage to worship him.”

When word of their inquiry got to King Herod, he was terrified—and not Herod alone, but most of Jerusalem as well. Herod lost no time. He gathered all the high priests and religion scholars in the city together and asked, “Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?”

They told him, “Bethlehem, Judah territory. The prophet Micah wrote it plainly:

“It’s you, Bethlehem, in Judah’s land, no longer bringing up the rear.
From you will come the leader who will shepherd-rule my people, my Israel.”

Herod then arranged a secret meeting with the scholars from the East. Pretending to be as devout as they were, he got them to tell him exactly when the birth-announcement star appeared. Then he told them the prophecy about Bethlehem, and said, “Go find this child. Leave no stone unturned. As soon as you find him, send word and I’ll join you at once in your worship.”

Instructed by the king, they set off. Then the star appeared again, the same star they had seen in the eastern skies. It led them on until it hovered over the place of the child. They could hardly contain themselves: They were in the right place! They had arrived at the right time!

They entered the house and saw the child in the arms of Mary, his mother. Overcome, they kneeled and worshiped him. Then they opened their luggage and presented gifts: gold, frankincense, myrrh.

In a dream, they were warned not to report back to Herod. So they worked out another route, left the territory without being seen, and returned to their own country.

After the scholars were gone, God’s angel showed up again in Joseph’s dream and commanded, “Get up. Take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt. Stay until further notice. Herod is on the hunt for this child, and wants to kill him.”

Joseph obeyed. He got up, took the child and his mother under cover of darkness. They were out of town and well on their way by daylight. They lived in Egypt until Herod’s death. This Egyptian exile fulfilled what Hosea had preached: “I called my son out of Egypt.”

Herod, when he realized that the scholars had tricked him, flew into a rage. He commanded the murder of every little boy two years old and under who lived in Bethlehem and its surrounding hills. (He determined that age from information he’d gotten from the scholars.)

Later, when Herod died, God’s angel appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt: “Up, take the child and his mother and return to Israel. All those out to murder the child are dead.”

Joseph obeyed. He got up, took the child and his mother, and reentered Israel. When he heard, though, that Archelaus had succeeded his father, Herod, as king in Judea, he was afraid to go there. But then Joseph was directed in a dream to go to the hills of Galilee.

On arrival, he settled in the village of Nazareth. This move was a fulfillment of the prophetic words, “He shall be called a Nazarene.”

Description

This game is a fun and high-energy way to celebrate the resurrection of Christ. It’s played in rounds, and an individual round takes only a few minutes to play.

Scriptures

Matthew 28:1-10

Materials

10-20 feet of rope

“Friday-Sunday” dice cube pattern (You can find this on the Lesson and Material Downloads page at www.teachthem.wordpress.com in the file named “Resurrection Roll – Dice Cube.”)

Tape

Glue

Scissors or knife to cut out dice cube

Cardboard or poster board (8.5 x 11 inches)

Optional: Small prizes for the winners – it’s possible to have multiple winners each round, so you will want to have lots of small prizes

Bible

Preparation

Print out the dice cube pattern.

Glue the pattern on top of the cardboard or poster board.

Cut out the dice cube pattern.

Bend the dice cube sides along the lines to form the cube. (It might be helpful to lightly score the cardboard along the dice cube lines to help it to bend. Make sure to score the cardboard side and not the paper side.)

Tape the dice cube anywhere the sides come together.

Lay out the rope in a large circle pattern.

Practice the script.

Procedure

Use the following script and instructions (or modify to suit your needs):

“Jesus died on the cross on a Friday, and His followers were crushed!”

“They believed He was the Savior, the Messiah, but now He was gone!”

“They couldn’t believe it! They didn’t know what to do.”

“They had put all their hopes in Jesus, and they didn’t know what to do with their lives now that He was dead.”

“Fortunately for them and for all of us, that wasn’t the end of the story!” (Have a volunteer read Matthew 28:1-10.)

“Imagine you were there!”

“One moment, life has no meaning – only mourning.”

“The next moment, all your hopes are restored – even upgraded!”

“What you thought was a terrible defeat turns into an incredible victory!”

“So, let’s play a game to celebrate that victory!” (Ask everyone to grab the rope and stand in a circle.)

“I have a die (singular for dice) here that has three sides that say, ‘Friday,’ and three sides that say, ‘Sunday.’”

“You are holding a rope that represents the tomb Jesus was buried in, and you represent Jesus.”

“Before I roll the die, you have to decide if you think it will land on ‘Friday’ or ‘Sunday’ and choose to either be in the tomb or out of the tomb.”

“If it lands on ‘Friday,’ you want to be in the tomb, where Jesus was after He died.”

“If it lands on ‘Sunday,’ you want to be outside the tomb, where Jesus was after He rose from the dead.”

“If you are in the wrong place, you are out of the game and have to leave the circle until we start a new round.”

“I will roll the die three times, and you can choose a different place (in or out) each time or stay where you are as long as you keep being right.”

“Whoever lasts all three rolls, wins!” (“….and gets a prize” if you are giving prizes)

“Are you ready to play?” (Start the game by having the kids choose a position inside or outside of the rope. Then roll the die. Any kids on the wrong side of the rope are out until the next round. After three rolls, acknowledge the winners and start a new round if you wish. End whenever you’ve had enough!)

Audience

Teens or adults who interact with people of different cultures or are planning to do so

Description

This game illustrates the differences between the many different cultures of the world. It borrows from the research of Geert Hofstede, Fons Trompenaars and Charles Hampden-Turner and the writings of Craig Storti. Facilitators can benefit from having some familiarity with the different cultural dimensions before conducting the game.

The materials contain many more cultural dimensions than you probably want to cover in one game. You can pick out the ones that are most relevant to your group, or you might want to run this game at different times during a multi-day meeting.

The “Cultural Continuums – Answers” file focuses largely on Europe and Asia, because that was the context for the group for which this game was developed. However, additional flags are provided in the “Cultural Continuums – Flags” file, and the full statistics for each continuum are in the Notes section of the PowerPoint slide. You can change the flags with this information.

Scriptures

Genesis 11:1-9

Materials

Flag cards – one set per team (These are available in the file “Cultural Continuums – Flags” on the Lessons and Downloads page at www.teachthem.wordpress.com.)

Answer key (This can be found in the file “Cultural Continuums – Answers” on the Lessons and Downloads page at www.teachthem.wordpress.com.)

Rolls of masking tape (one per team)

Projector

Screen

Computer

Flipchart

Markers

Bible

Preparation

Print out copies of the flag cards (one copy per team)

Review the facilitator notes on the Notes section under each slide in the “Cultural Continuums – Answers.”

Practice the script.

Procedure

Use the following script and instructions (or modify to suit your needs):

“You may remember the story of the Tower of Babel.” (Ask a volunteer to read it out loud from Genesis 11:1-9.)

“This Scripture is the birthplace of cultural diversity.”

“Never again would mankind all speak the same language or observe the same cultural practices – at least not until Christ returns, and probably not even then will we give up the cultural practices that make us unique.”

“So, let’s see how different we’ve become.”

“We are going to play a game to highlight the many differences among the various cultures of the world.”

“I will briefly describe a continuum of a cultural dimension. (A continuum is something that goes from one extreme on one end to the other extreme on the other end.)”

“After I’ve described it, you will take a group of flags (that I’m about to hand you) and stick them to the wall in the order that you think best represents where you think that country falls on the continuum.” (Hand out sets of flag pictures and tape to each group.)

“Then, I will show you the ‘right answers’ on the screen at the front of the room.”

“Just so that you know, the ‘right answers’ are based on the work of some cultural experts who have been studying different cultures for many years.”

“You may not always agree with their findings, and that’s okay. We can talk about it during the debrief.”

“Sometimes, countries had the same ranking or rating in their studies. In this case, the countries will be shown in the same place on the continuum I show you at the front of the room.”

“Does anyone have any questions about how the game will work?” (Answer questions.)

“Okay, let’s play.” (Do as many cultural dimensions as you like. After each one, you might want to ask the group members to explain why they ordered the flags in the way that they did. There will always be at least one country that wasn’t part of the study. You might want to focus on these and ask each group how they made their decision in regard to these countries. When you are done with all the dimensions, have the groups discuss the following questions. (You may want to post them on a flipchart.) Allow 15-20 minutes for discussion, and then debrief as a large group.)

Debrief Questions

What do you think about the different cultural dimensions, and where the countries landed on the continuums?

What was surprising to you?

Is there anything that you disagreed with? Why?

What do these differences mean for how we work with people from different cultures?

What will you personally do differently as a result of what you have learned?

Description

This game illustrates evangelism in a high-energy, fun way through a game of tag. It’s a very quick game, so you will probably want to play it several times. The game works best with larger groups of kids, but it can still be played with small groups.

Optionally, you can play the game outdoors with water (for “baptizing”), but if you do, it needs to be okay for the kids to get really wet!

Scriptures

Matthew 28:18-20

Materials

OPTIONAL: Paper or plastic cups for each child

OPTIONAL: A tub or bucket of water

Bible

Preparation

OPTIONAL: Fill the tub with water (You only need the tub of water and the cups if you plan to do the “baptizing” option.)

Practice the script.

Procedure

Use the following script and instructions (or modify to suit your needs):

“Today, we are going to talk about the last words that Jesus said before he rose back into heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father.”

“Last words are important.”

“If a leader is leaving his followers, and he has one more opportunity to talk to them, he’s going to say something important, don’t you think?”

“Sure he is…and Jesus was no different. He had something very important He wanted to say to His disciples.”

“So, He had over 500 of His followers meet Him at the Mount of Olives, and He said this to them.” (Ask volunteer to read Matthew 28:18-20.)

“What did Jesus tell them to do?” (Answer: go and make disciples, baptize them and teach them)

“So, one of the most important things Jesus ever said to His followers was, ‘Go, Make Disciples, Baptize Them and Teach Them.’”

“Do you think this is still important for us to do as followers of Jesus today?” (Listen for responses.)

“Sure it is!”

“It’s just as important today as it was when Jesus originally said it.”

“We need to tell as many people as we can about Jesus, so that they can go to heaven, too.”

“And the neat thing is, every time a new person becomes a follower of Jesus, they can then tell all their friends and family about Jesus, too!”

“Now, there are millions and millions of Christians in the world.”

“If all the Christians were telling as many people as they could find about Jesus, how long do you think it would be before the whole world knew about Him?” (Listen for responses.)

“Not too long, huh?”

“Well, let’s try this out.”

“We are going to play a game, called Kingdom Tag.”

“It’s played like regular tag, but there are a few differences.”

“First, you start with one person who is ‘IT,’ and that person represents a Christian.”

“Everyone else represents someone who doesn’t know Jesus, and each person can live in different parts of the world.”

“If you get tagged by the Christian (the person who is ‘IT’), you become a Christian, and then you are also ‘IT!’”

“Then, instead of running away, your new job will be to try to tag other people.”

“They will then become Christians, too, and their new jobs will be to tag other people.”

“We will keep playing until everyone has been tagged and becomes a Christian.” (If you want to do the “baptizing” option, then anyone who is “IT” should run and get a cup filled with water. They tag people by “baptizing” them with the water.)

“Every few minutes, I’ll ask you to raise your hand if you still haven’t been tagged yet, so be honest and raise your hand if you still haven’t been tagged.”

“Does anyone have any questions about how to play the game?” (Answer questions.)

“Okay, I’m going to need one volunteer to be it.” (Select volunteer. Then define what is out-of-bounds and where they are welcome to run and hide.)

“I’m going to give you a five second head-start before I let the Christian go.”

“Ready? Go!” (Count to five slowly before letting your “IT” person go. Every few minutes, ask everyone to raise their hands who has not been tagged. The game is over when everyone has been tagged. If it goes quickly, play several rounds, if you like. Then, call the kids back to talk about the Debrief Questions listed below.)

Debrief Questions

What did you think about the game?

How long did it take to tag everyone? Does that surprise you?

Why do you think it happened so quickly?

Could we do the same thing by sharing about Jesus with other people we meet?

How did you know if someone had already been tagged or not?

Is that anything like how hard it is to know if someone is a Christian in real life?

So what do you think we should do if we can’t tell if someone is a Christian or not?

What will you commit to doing this week about sharing Jesus with other people?

Description
This object lesson teaches about greed and selfishness and how God wants us to deal with the blessings that He gives us. It uses a metaphor based on the two seas in Israel.

Scriptures
• Luke 6:38, 12:13-21
• Ephesians 3:20-21

Materials
• Small, plastic cups (about 50)
• Big, plastic cups (two)
• Pitcher
• Bucket
• Water (enough to fill the pitcher)
• Cookie sheet with a lip around the edge
• Table
• Bible

Preparation
• Fill the pitcher with water
• Practice the script.

Procedure
Use the following script and instructions (or modify to suit your needs):
• “Let’s read a story that Jesus told about a greedy man.” (Ask volunteer to read Luke 12:13-21.)
• “Why do you think Jesus told them this story?” (Listen to responses. The main idea is that Jesus wanted them to see that greed and the desire for earthly things were not the most important things for those in the Kingdom of God.)
• “What do you think about the rich man in this story?” (Listen to responses.)
• “What else do you think the man could have done with all his extra crop?” (Listen to responses. The one you are looking for to begin the object lesson is that he could have shared the food with people who didn’t have very much.)
• “I’m going to give you a picture of how God wants us to handle the blessings He gives us.”
• “I need everyone to stand up and form a single-file line.” (Help them get into a line. It doesn’t have to be straight. If you have a large number of participants, you can wrap the line around the room.)
• “This line represents some very important bodies of water in the land of Israel.”
• “At this end (designate one end of the line) is the Sea of Galilee.” (Hand the participant on that end one of the large cups, and ask him/her to hold it.)
• “And at this end (designate the other end of the line) is the Dead Sea.” (Hand the participant on the other end the second large cup, and ask him/her to hold it. Place the bucket nearby. If you have a Bible with maps in it, you might want to show the group what Israel looks like and point out the two seas with the Jordan River between them.)
• “The two seas are connected by the Jordan River.” (Hand all the remaining participants one small cup each and ask them to hold it.)
• “Now, even though these two seas are connected by the same river, they are very different from one another.”
• “The Sea of Galilee contains 27 species of fish, some found nowhere else in the world.”
• “Its sweet waters serve as the main water supply for Israel, and its shores are lush with vegetation.”
• “Many people make their living from its waters, fishing or planting crops near the shore.”
• “The Dead Sea, on the other hand, didn’t get its name for nothing.”
• “There are no fish, no fishermen, no vegetation on its shores.”
• “It’s twice as wide and almost four times as long as the Sea of Galilee, but the Dead Sea is toxic and bitter.”
• “There is no life in it or around it except bacteria and one type of algea.”
• “Why is it dead? There are several reasons.”
• “For one, it’s the point of lowest elevation on the planet outside of the ocean depths.”
• “The Jordan River brings water and minerals into the Dead Sea, but it’s so low that the only way the water gets out is by evaporation.”
• “And it’s so hot in this part of the world that seven million gallons of water evaporate from the Dead Sea every day!”
• “So the water evaporates, but the minerals (like salt) stay.”
• “In fact, the Dead Sea is six times saltier than the ocean!”
• “You are probably wondering why I gave you the cups.”
• “We are going to pretend like we are the two seas and the Jordan River to make a point about sharing what God blesses you with.” (Go to the end of the line with the person representing the Sea of Galilee, and use the pitcher to pour water into his/her cup. Then instruct him/her to pour water into the next person’s cup and so on down the line until the water reaches the “Dead Sea” participant. Each time the “Sea of Galilee” participant’s cup of water is emptied, fill it back up. Each time the “Dead Sea” participant’s cup fills up, have him/her empty it into the bucket.)
• “In this demonstration, I represent the top of the Jordan River, which starts before the Sea of Galilee.”
• “I’m sending water and fish and minerals into the Sea of Galilee, and those are travelling down through the Jordan River to the Dead Sea.” (Keep pouring out water whenever necessary.)
• “As a result, the Jordan River Valley is considered to be one of the most fertile places on the planet.
• “It takes all these minerals and water down, down to the Dead Sea, but the fish know not to get too close or they will die.”
• “Then, the water evaporates from the Dead Sea, leaving all the salt and minerals behind.” (Have “Dead Sea” volunteer pour water into the bucket to demonstrate evaporation.)
• “Now, the water is like God’s blessings, and I’m like God, pouring out blessings to this person.”
• “He/she is then sharing those blessings with someone.”
• “As long as he/she keeps sharing those blessings, I’ll keep more blessings coming.”
• “But do you see what the Dead Sea person is doing?”
• “He/she is keeping all the blessings for himself/herself!”
• “That doesn’t work with God.”
• “Just like in the story, God says, ‘You fool! I’m taking to take those blessings away from you and give them to someone else.’”
• “And so, just like that, when we try to keep all the blessings for ourselves, they evaporate!”
• “Do you want to be a ‘Sea of Galilee’ person or a ‘Dead Sea’ person?” (Listen to responses.)
• “’Sea of Galilee’ people keep getting new blessings from God.”
• “They enjoy those blessings and then pass them on to someone else, which gives them the blessing of the joy of sharing.”
• “Okay, pass the last of your blessings down to the Dead Sea, and then bring your cups over here.” (Move to the table, and set out the cookie sheet.)
• “Everyone who has small cups, place them on this cookie sheet right-side-up.” (Have them make a single layer of cups with each cup as close to the others as possible. All sides should touch other cups if possible. Once you have a bottom layer down, start stacking cups (use extras when you need to) on top to make a second layer. Each cup should rest on top of three different cups beneath it. When the second layer is done, add a third and a fourth until you have just one cup the very top of the pyramid you’ve created.)
• “Let’s pretend these cups represent each one of us, and this pitcher represents God.”
• “God pours his blessings out to you, and He wants you to enjoy them.” (Demonstrate by pouring water into the top cup slowly and evenly.)
• “But God never intends for you to keep that blessing all for yourself.”
• “God will bless you more than you can handle all by yourself, and He wants you to share your overflow with those people He has put in your life.” (Allow the water to overflow the top cup into the cups beneath it. Ask volunteer to read Ephesians 3:20-21.)
• “This Scripture says that God is able to bless us immeasurably more than we ask for or than we even imagine.”
• “In the King James version of the Bible, it says that God is able to do exceeding abundantly more than we ask for or imagine.”
• “Isn’t that cool?”
• “The blessings will just keep coming and coming!” (Keep pouring until the cups on the bottom level start to overflow. It’s likely that not all the cups will receiver water from the upper rows. That’s okay.)
• “You just keep blessing those around you with your overflow, and God will keep blessing you.”
• “Now, you know these people in the second row, but maybe you don’t know the people in the third row.”
• “When you bless those close to you, it gives them the ability to bless those who are close to them who you don’t even know.”
• “Then those in this third row can bless those in the fourth row!”
• “When people get blessed, it’s easier for them to bless others.”
• “And maybe some of them know God as their Lord, too.”
• “God will bless them directly in addition to the blessings they get from knowing you.” (Start filling the emptier cups on the second, third or fourth rows, and allow them to overflow to the rows beneath them. Ask volunteer to read Luke 6:38.)
• “God wants to bless you so much that it just runs over like this water, but He says that He will use the same measure you use to bless others.”
• “In other words, the size of cup you use to pour our blessings on others is the same size cup God will use to bless you.”
• “What size cup do you want to use to bless others?” (Listen to responses.)
• “I’m going to use the biggest cup I can find, because I want God’s blessings to keep coming and coming in huge amounts.” (Thank everyone and let them take their seats.)

Description
This object lesson teaches about how God’s plan for us can be difficult to see at times. Even so, we should do our best to follow the path He has set out for us.

Scriptures
• Psalm 37:23-24
• Proverbs 3:5-6, 16:9
• Romans 8:28

Materials
• Dot-to-dot pattern (You can find this on the Lesson and Material Downloads page at www.teachthem.wordpress.com in the file named Connect the D-O-T-S – Pattern.ppt)
• Posterboard or flipchart paper (2-4, depending upon how large you want to make the dot-to-dot pattern)
• LCD or overhead projector (or photo copy machine, depending upon how you choose to enlarge the pattern)
• Marker

Preparation
• Enlarge the dot-to-dot pattern. (In the file mentioned above, it is the first slide. The second slide shows the completed dot-to-dot picture, and the third slide shows a more stylized dot-to-dot picture of the same pattern in case you want to project it. You can enlarge it a few different ways – print it and then photo copy it using the magnification settings on the copier, use either an LCD or overhead projector to project the image on several posterboards or flipchart pages and then trace the image onto the paper.)
• Hang the dot-to-dot pattern where your volunteer will be able to reach it.
• Practice the script.

Procedure
Use the following script and instructions (or modify to suit your needs):
• “Let’s do a dot-to-dot puzzle!”

Unfinished Puzzle

• “I’m going to need a volunteer.” (Select a volunteer from the audience.)
• (To volunteer) “You know how to do these, right
• “You connect the dots with a line in the order of the numbers next to the dot.”
• “Start with number “1;” then go to “2;” then to “3” and so on. (Let the volunteer begin to connect the dots with a marker.)
• (To audience) “You know, doing a dot-to-dot puzzle is a lot like trying to follow God’s plan for your life.”
• “When you first get started, it’s hard to see what He’s doing in your life.”
• “It can look like just a bunch of dots.”
• “But each of those dots is an event in your life.”
• “Some are big events; most are small.”
• “Some are so small that you wouldn’t even think they would matter, but Romans 8:28 tells us that God uses ALL things for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.”
• “Some dots represent good choices that you made, and some represent bad choices, but God uses everything!”
• “He just keeps connecting those dots.” (By this time, your volunteer should have run into at least one of the following problems: a) There is no dot or label for “10;” b) Dots “13, 14, 15 and 16” are not labeled; c) Many of the dots have more than one number associated with them.)
• (To volunteer) “Is there a problem?” (Listen for response.)
• (To group) “Sometimes, God’s next step for you won’t be clear.”
• “What do you think you should do when this happens?” (Take responses, and listen for ideas like “pray, read the Bible, ask other Christians, wait for the Lord.” Offer these if the kids don’t.)
• “Right! Eventually, the Lord will usually show you the next step.”
• “Sometimes, though, He is testing you to see which path you will take.”
• “And sometimes, He doesn’t have a specific next move for you to take. He is fine with you making the best decision you can that honors Him. In this case, He is fine with any of your choices and is giving you some freedom to select the one that you think is best.”
• “Often during these times, God doesn’t move quickly, so you may have to be patient.” (Show volunteer the order of the missing dots. They are labeled on both the second and third slide in the PowerPoint file.)
• (To group and volunteer) “Has anyone noticed that some of the dots have more than one number associated with them?” (Demonstrate that you are looking for a show of hands.)
• “What do you think this might represent in God’s plan for your life?” (Listen to responses. The group may come up with some creative ideas, but one possibility is that God might ask you to go through some experiences multiple times – especially if they were tests that you didn’t pass the first time through.)
• “There are a few lines and squares already drawn into the pattern. What do you think these might represent in God’s plan for your life?” (Listen to responses. Again, they might have creative answers other than this one, but one possibility is that these could represent resources and helps that God provides in our lives. Another possibility is that these could represent times when God had to carry us through a difficult time.)
• “Can any of you tell what the picture is yet?” (Listen to responses, but neither confirm nor deny at this point.)
• “You know, sometimes when we think we can tell where God is going, we want to jump ahead and skip some of the dots.”
• “You can see examples of this in Scripture when:
o Abram had a son with Hagar instead of with Sarai.
o Jacob stole his brother’s blessing and birthright.
o David tried to carry the Ark of the Covenant on a cart instead of the shoulders of the priests.
o James and John offered to call down fire on a village that had rejected Jesus.
o Peter often tried to take leadership of the apostles before it was time.”
• “But what does it do if I jump from this dot to this dot and skip the ones in-between?” (Demonstrate by pointing to dots in the pattern. Then listen for responses.)
• “It messes up the picture, right?”
• “Then, God has to lead me back to the right dot so that I can go back through the right steps again.”
• “It’s hard to do, but we should be patient and go at the Lord’s pace.” (Have a volunteer read Psalm 37:23-24, Proverbs 3:5-6 and Proverbs 16:9.)
• “God cares about the steps we take, and He wants us to walk in His path.” (Watch the volunteer, and help him/her whenever he/she gets stuck. When the puzzle is complete, thank and dismiss the volunteer.)
• “Who can read it now?” (Listen to responses. The correct answer is “D.O.T.S. – Disciples of the Savior,” and there is a cross behind the text.)
• “If we continue to follow God’s path, He will make us into what He truly wants us to be: D.O.T.S. – Disciples of the Savior!”

Description
This object lesson teaches about strongholds, what they are, where they come from and how to defeat the ones that are created by the Enemy.

Audience
Children, youth, adults

Scriptures
o John 8:44
o 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

Materials
o PowerPoint file – “Strongholds – Bricks.ppt (You can find this on the Lesson and Material Downloads page at www.teachthem.wordpress.com.)
o A board or wall of some sort to stick the bricks to.
o Glue, paste or tape for making “bricks”
o Tape or push pins for sticking the “bricks” to the wall (depending upon whether or not you use a cork board)

o Scissors

Preparation
o Print the bricks from the “Strongholds – Bricks.ppt” file. (You can also create your own if these don’t suit your audience. The positive sides of the bricks represent the Fruit of the Spirit. The negative sides of the bricks represent the opposite of the Fruit of the Spirit. I’ve included many different options for the negative sides so that you can pick the ones that the audience will identify with most, but you may also want to have several different words for the negative sides. You might also want to print several copies of each brick so that you can build an impressively big “stronghold.”)
o Fold each “brick” page in half along the dotted line, and then tape or paste them together.
o Trim the bricks along their borders, and discard the white space that’s left over.
o Make tape “donuts” (circles of tape), and put them where the volunteers can get to them quickly.
o Arrange all the bricks with the negative side facing up, and put them in easy reach of the volunteers.
o Practice the script.

Procedure
Use the following script and instructions (or modify to suit your needs):
• “We are in a spiritual war between God and Satan, and the battlefield is our minds.”
• “Satan wants to control and destroy our minds, and God wants our minds completely devoted to Him.”
• “Satan wants to control and destroy our minds, because it is the only way he can hurt an all-powerful, all-knowing, everywhere God.”
• “He tries to wound the Creator through His creation.”
• “If we want to help God win the war, we need to know how the battle is fought.” (Ask volunteer to read 2 Corinthians 10:3-5.)
• “We do not wage war as the world does. We have different weapons.”
• “We don’t use bazookas or fighter jets or nuclear missiles to fight this war, because it’s not a physical war – it’s a thought war!”
• “We are fighting to give control of our minds and thoughts to God.”
• “Regular weapons won’t do anything against thoughts.”
• “But this Scripture says that our weapons have divine power to demolish strongholds!”
• “That sounds pretty powerful!”
• “What are these weapons that this Scripture is talking about? Does anyone know?” (Listen to responses. If no one mentions them, let them know that our main spiritual weapons are prayer, the Word and the name of Jesus Christ.)
• “Okay, so now we know our weapons. What about strongholds? Does anyone know what those might be?” (Listen to responses. You are looking for the idea of a fort or a military position that is very strong – a “strong hold” on some territory.)
• “In war, a stronghold is a place that one side has built up and fortified.”
• “They have a ‘strong hold’ on that place, so it’s an effective place for them to use to wage war against their enemies.”
• “Whether it’s a good or bad stronghold depends upon whose stronghold it is.”
• “You can find examples in Scripture of both positive strongholds (held by the allies of God) and negative strongholds (held by the allies of Satan).”
• “In the thought war between God and Satan, spiritual strongholds are habits of thinking.”
• “There are three ways for thoughts to get into your mind: you can think them yourself, God can put the thought into your mind through His Spirit, or Satan can put the thought into your mind.”
• “Even when you think the thoughts yourself, they are heavily influenced by the habits of thinking you have developed by listening to either God or Satan when they gave you thoughts.”
• “By the way, if you want to hear God’s thoughts in your mind, you have to listen carefully. He rarely shouts them like Satan does.”
• “So, it’s really important to know where the thought came from.”
• “If they come from Satan, we don’t want to listen to them.”
• “Jesus said that Satan is ‘the father of lies,’ that ‘when he lies, he speaks his native language,’ and that ‘there is no truth in him.’” (John 8:44)
• “Everything Satan says to you is a lie, and everything God says to you is the truth.”
• “Satan starts lying to you when you are a very young child, because he wants to build strongholds of lies in you mind. He wants you in the habit of believing his lies.”
• “Let me give you a picture of what this looks like.” (Ask for three or four volunteers to come up front, and tell them that you want them to use the tape donuts to stick the “bricks” to the wall or board you are using for this lesson. Tell them to stick them so that they look like bricks in a wall, and ask them to show only the red lettering on the bricks. If you didn’t print them in color, you may need to mark the bricks in some way so that your volunteers can tell which side is the lie and which side is the truth. While they are working, continue with the lesson.)
• “When Satan gives you a thought, you have a choice whether or not to agree with it.”
• “If you agree with it, or if you choose to just passively receive it and not evaluate whether it is right or wrong, it becomes a brick in Satan’s stronghold of lies.”
• “Once Satan finds a lie that you will agree with or passively allow into your mind, he works full time to reinforce that particular lie until it forms a ‘strong hold’ on the way you think.”
• “The volunteers are showing us how Satan builds his stronghold.”
• “All of these are lies that he wants us to believe.” (Read some of the bricks out loud.)
• “Brick-by-brick, lie-by-lie, he builds up this stronghold, and it changes the way we think and how we see the world around us.”
• “The worst part is, once we develop the habit of thinking in this way, we start to do Satan’s work for him.”
• “We add bricks to the wall without him even having to lift a finger, and it gets stronger and stronger.”
• “Now, when God’s truth comes into your mind, Satan will attack it from his stronghold.”
• “You could be sitting in church and listening to a sermon or talking to a godly friend or reading something with truth in it.”
• “God will often use these things to give you a truth He wants you to hear.”
• “It enters your mind, but Satan attacks it from his stronghold of lies and convinces you it’s not true.”
• “As long as Satan has this stronghold in your mind, it will be difficult for God’s truth to survive.”
• “But I have some good news for you!” (Ask volunteer to read 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 again.)
• “The Scriptures say that we can demolish the strongholds with our weapons that have divine power.”
• “Here’s how to do it!”
• “First, stop allowing thoughts to come into your mind unsupervised.”
• “You’re at war! No military commander allows some stranger to enter his base of operations without an armed escort!” (Ask for a volunteer to come join you at the front.)
• “Let’s pretend this person is a thought and that I’m your mind.”
• “If I recognize that I’m in a thought war, am I going to do this… (have volunteer approach you while you act out the following) Yo! Whassup, man? Don’t know who you are and don’t care. Come join the party!” (Have volunteer pass you by.)
• “What do you think, is that how I should greet this thought?” (Listen to responses.)
• “Of course not! He could be a terrorist bringing in a mind bomb!”
• “Let’s do this again the right way.” (Have volunteer go back to his/her original place and then try to pass by you.)
• “Halt! Who goes there? Are you friend or foe?” (Tell your volunteer to say he/she is a friend.)
• “Oh, yeah? Well, we will see about that! I’m taking you to my General!” (Gently, but playfully grab the volunteer’s arm and lead him/her to another place in the room. Then look up as if you are praying and say…)
• “General Jesus, I found this thought trying to gain access to our military command. Is he friend or foe?” (Pretend that Jesus tells you he is a foe.)
• “He’s the enemy? Thank you, sir. I will dispose of him right away.” (Playfully escort the volunteer back to his/her original starting point. If he/she resists, you might need to ask another adult in the room to help you escort him/her.)
• “Now that you know that thought is a lie, never let it back into your mind.”
• “Each time Satan tries to sneak it through, reject it.”
• “You might say something like, ‘I know that’s a lie, and I reject it in the name of Jesus!’”
• “Whenever you reject a lie, you’ve got to replace it with the truth.”
• “It’s not enough to say, ‘That’s not true!’ You’ve also got to replace it with what is true.”
• “For example, take a look that the Enemy’s stronghold that these volunteers have been building.” (Point to board or wall where the volunteers have been adding the bricks.)
• “It’s good to say that this isn’t true about me.” (Read off one of the bricks.)
• “But then I also need to replace it with a similar truth.” (Turn the brick over, and move the tape or pin to the other side so that you can stick it back to the board on the green / Fruit of the Spirit side.)
• “So I ask God what is really true about me, and He gives me the truth He wants to occupy my mind.” (Stick brick to the board.)
• “Touch your neighbor and say, ‘Ask God what HE wants you to think!’” (Allow a moment for them to do this.)
• “The more I do this, the more I trade Satan’s lies for the truth of God.” (Have your volunteers start flipping the bricks to the positive side.)
• “And when you do this, you’ve got to believe what you hear God say.”
• “It isn’t always easy, because God’s truth sometimes looks wrong compared to what is going on around us and what we thought was true before.”
• “You may have to pray, ‘This is hard to believe, Lord, but I trust You. Help me to see the truth in this.’”
• “This is called taking every thought captive before Christ, and it demolishes strongholds.”
• “In fact, it replaces Satan’s strongholds with God’s strongholds in your mind!”
• “Then, when Satan tries to send a lie your way, God’s truth will attack it from God’s strong hold in your thinking.” (Even if they haven’t completely finished flipping bricks, thank your volunteers, and let them return to their seats.)
• “Let’s recite a Rhyme Time that will help us remember today’s lesson:

Satan’s strongholds really stink!
I’m letting God choose what I think!

Description
This object lesson teaches about fear and how to deal with it.

Audience
Children, youth, adults

Materials
o F.E.A.R. Acronym Cards (You can find these on the Lesson and Material Downloads page at www.teachthem.wordpress.com in the file named F-E-A-R – Acronym Cards.ppt)
o Flipchart or whiteboard (or you could project the Scriptures with an LCD projector)
o Marker

Preparation
o Print the F.E.A.R. Acronym Cards, and arrange them face-up on a table.
o Write the “fear” Scriptures on a flipchart or whiteboard, and cover them until you need them.
o Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4)
o The LORD is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)
o I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. (Psalm 34:4)
o He (the man who fears the Lord) will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. (Psalm 112:7)
o Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe. (Proverbs 29:5)
o So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10)
o Practice the script.

Procedure
Use the following script and instructions (or modify to suit your needs):
• “When was the last time you did something really scary? The kind of scary that knots your stomach and weakens your knees? The kind of scary that makes you feel like everything is out of control?” (Take responses.)
• “Fear is an interesting emotion.”
• “It protects us from doing the really dumb stuff that would win us a Darwin Award (a pretend award given out to people who do dumb, life-threatening things).”
• “But it also keeps us from taking important risks and doing what we know we should.”
• “I’ve come to think of fear as an acronym.”
• “Which acronym you use says a lot about how you approach scary things.”
• “I need four volunteers for this lesson.” (Select volunteers, and have them come up front.)
• “On the table, there are 52 different words that all start with the letters ‘F,’ ‘E,’ ‘A,’ or ‘R.’”
• “Most of the words will fit into an acronym that will tell us what some people thing about fear.”
• “I would like for you to represent words that begin with the letter ‘F.’” (Appoint one of the volunteers to always choose a word beginning with ‘F.’)
• “I would like for you to represent words that begin with the letter ‘E.’” Appoint one of the volunteers to always choose a word beginning with ‘E.’)
• “I would like for you to represent words that begin with the letter ‘A.’” Appoint one of the volunteers to always choose a word beginning with ‘A.’)
• “I would like for you to represent words that begin with the letter ‘R.’” Appoint one of the volunteers to always choose a word beginning with ‘R.’)
• “As a group, select four words that fit together to make an acronym for the word fear.”
• “You can only use each word once.”
• “Let’s do the first few together. Find the words, ‘Forget Everything And Run,’ and come show them to us.” (Wait for them to find these words and then show them to the audience.)
• “Some people think F.E.A.R. means that they should Forget Everything And Run, but this isn’t very helpful. It doesn’t solve your problem.”
• “Let’s try another one. Find the words, “Forget Everything and Relax.” (Wait for them to find these.)
• “This isn’t anymore helpful. Your F.E.A.R.s might actually happen, and you won’t be ready for them.”
• “Now find these words, ‘Failure Expected and Received.’” (Wait for them to find these.)
• “You get what you expect. If you expect to fail, you probably will. This is not the best approach to fear.”
• “One more together – find ‘Finding excuses and Reasons.’” (Wait for them to find these.)
• “Often people use F.E.A.R. to find excuses and reasons for not doing what they should be doing.”
• “Now, you try it on your own.” (Allow them a few minutes to select their first acronym. Then have them show the audience. If the acronym makes sense, ask the audience the following question. If it doesn’t, challenge your volunteers to try again.)
• “What do you think this acronym says about people who approach fear in this way?” (Allow the volunteers to make five or six different acronyms, and ask the audience about what it says about the people who approach fear in that way. Then, dismiss your volunteers.)
• “Once, when General George Patton was praised for his bravery in battle, he said, ‘Sir, I am not a brave man — the truth is, I am an utter craven coward. I have never been within the sound of gunshot or in sight of battle in my whole life that I wasn’t so scared that I had sweat in the palms of my hands, but I have learned early in my life never to take counsel of my fears.’”
• “Fear is a normal feeling at times, but we shouldn’t allow it to control us.”
• “We should find ways of dealing with our fear so that it doesn’t prevent us from accomplishing God’s purposes in our lives.”
• “One great way to deal with fear is to memorize Scriptures about it.”
• “I’ve written some on the board.”
• “Read through them, and then pick a few that you want to memorize this week.”
• (Some of the acronyms you can make from the words in the card file are:
o False Expectations Appearing Real
o False Evidence Appearing Real
o For Everything A Reason
o Face Everything And Recover
o Faith Erases All Reservations
o Forgetting Everything’s All Right
o Focus Energy And Respond)

Description
This object lesson teaches about our hearts and how God works in them to produce something beautiful. It’s preferable to do it outside.

Audience
Children, youth, adults

Materials
o Landscaping edging (I used 20 ft, but that is quite big.)
o Stakes for the edging (8-10 should do if you create the 20 ft heart.)
o Hammer
o Potting soil
o Spade or some other gardening tool
o (Optional) Gardening gloves and hat
o Watering can with water in it
o Assorted garbage – plastic, peelings, etc. (Be careful not to put anything in the soil that might cut fingers.)
o Hard soil to spread over the top of the heart (enough to cover the surface)
o Rocks – several dozen of assorted sizes to mix in with the soil
o Manure/fertilizer – actual manure is good for shock value, but fertilizer will make the point.
o Sprouts – a few small plants just beginning to show above the soil
o Beautiful flowers or ground cover – enough to cover most or all of the heart
o Marker
o Packages of seeds (4 or more)

Preparation
o Create a heart shape with the landscaping edging, and stake it down. (Cut the edging in half to make this easier.)
o Fill the shape almost to the top with potting soil.
o Mix some garbage and rocks into the soil.
o Cover the soil and the garbage with hard soil clods that you’ve dug up from somewhere else
o Label the seed packages using the marker so that they say, “Answered Prayer,” “Truth,” “Kindness and Love,” and “Hope.” If you have more than four packages, you can label them with other “seeds from God” that you can think of.
o Practice the script.

Procedure
Use the following script and instructions (or modify to suit your needs):
• “I’m going to give you a picture of what our hearts are like.”
• “Think of your heart like a garden.”
• “Before we know Jesus as our Lord and Savior, the soil in our heart is hard and dead. Nothing will grow there except weeds.” (Show hard soil in heart.)
• “But God wants to make our hearts beautiful, so the first thing He does is to break up all that hard soil.” (Ask a volunteer to come break up the soil with a spade or some other tool. Hand them the gloves and the gardening hat if you have them.)
• “This isn’t very fun for us. Our hard hearts are difficult to break up, and the tools that God uses are sometimes very sharp.”
• “He might allow us to go through some difficult experiences or lose something we love, but He only does this to break up the hard soil and start planting good seeds on the inside.”
• “Thankfully, God will also pour in some Living Water to help break up the soil.” (Have volunteer pour in some water.)
• “Living Water is the Word of God. It’s the Bible. The Scriptures are like water to a thirsty soul, and we need to drink deeply of them every day to stay spiritually healthy.”
• “Sometimes breaking up the hard soil takes a very long time. The harder the soil in our hearts, the longer it will take God to make it usable for His purposes.”
• “Once the hard soil is broken up, God will remove the parts that are unusable.” (Have volunteer pull our chunks that don’t break down into the soil.)
• “By breaking up the hard soil, God can give you a new heart.”
• “If you are willing to receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior, your heart will be made new.” (Make sure audience can see the potting soil.)
• “The Scriptures say that God will remove our heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 11:19)
• “Now, when a gardener is preparing soil, he mixes in some nasty stuff like this manure.” (Give manure/fertilizer to volunteer, and have him/her mix it into the soil.)
• “It stinks, it’s gross, you really don’t want to deal with it, but it’s the best way to make the soil rich and ready to grow healthy plants and flowers.”
• “Romans 8:28 tells us that when you give your heart to God, He will use even the bad stuff in your past to enrich your heart ‘soil.’”
• “In other words, He will use the times you’ve been hurt, the times bad things happened to you and the bad decisions you made to bless you.”
• “That’s great news!!!!”
• “God then plants some seeds in your heart.” (Have volunteer sprinkle in some seeds and work them in with the spade.)
• “Actually, God plants seeds even before you become a Christian, when your heart is hard, but many of them don’t make it into the soil.”
• “When Jesus taught about this, He said that the birds of the air will steal the seeds before they have a chance to take root in the hard soil.”
• “He told his disciples that the birds of the air represent our enemy, Satan, who doesn’t want God’s truth to get into your heart.”
• “God’s seeds can represent times when He answered prayers for you or times when He spoke some truth into your life through a friend or teacher or parent or event a stranger.” (Have volunteer show the labels on these packages of seeds.)
• “Sometime an act of kindness or love can plant a seed.” (Have volunteer show the label on this package and pour in some seeds.)
• “And sometimes God gives you hope in difficult situation.” (Have volunteer show label on this package and pour in some seeds.)
• “When God plants His seeds, He is faithful to continue to water the seeds with His Living Word and shine the light of His Son on them.” (Have volunteer water the seeds.)
• “Eventually, some of those seeds will start to grow in our hearts.” (Have volunteer plant a few spouts in the soil.)
• “God will continue to water and care for these while He plants even more seeds.” (Have volunteer water soil and plant a few more seeds.)
• “But just because we got new hearts doesn’t mean that our hearts are completely pure.” (Have volunteer sift through soil until he/she finds trash or rocks.)
• “We probably still have trash that we allowed into our hearts before we became Christians, and it’s likely that we still have some hard places in our hearts.”
• “The trash represents sinfulness that we haven’t dealt with yet, and the rocks represent emotional hard places – hurts, pains, disappointments, hatreds, fears… that we haven’t allowed God into.”
• “God can plant beautiful things in the parts of our hearts that we give to Him, but He can’t do anything with the areas we won’t trust Him with.”
• “The trash and the hard places will stay in our hearts until we allow God to help us get rid of them.”
• “While other parts of our heart are showing new life and the evidence of God’s work, these places are in danger of hardening back up if we don’t turn them over to God.”
• “The more we trust God, the more beautiful our hearts will become.” (Have the volunteer replace the sprouts with some beautiful flowers.)
• “And when our hearts are beautiful, God will use them to bring joy and happiness to other people who see them.”
• “That’s beautiful, isn’t it?” (Thank and dismiss volunteer.)
• “So, are we done? Can we just let it alone and enjoy it?” (Listen for responses.)
• “No. If we leave it alone, what will happen?” (Listen for responses.)
• “Right! It will die. These flowers need watering and sunshine every day.”
• “In the same way, you need to meet with God every day – to enjoy His Son and to get the Living Water that comes from the Bible.”
• “And even if we do that everyday, is that enough to keep our heart garden healthy?” (Listen to responses.)
• “No, because we have an enemy, and his name is Satan.”
• “Satan plants seeds, too, but they grow into weeds that will choke out the beauty from our garden.”
• “Satan’s seeds are bad thoughts, worries, fears, resentments and other things that keep us from loving God, loving our neighbor and loving ourselves.”
• “Whenever you notice a weed in your heart garden, what should you do?” (Listen to responses.)
• “Right, pull it out! Don’t let those bad thoughts or worries or fears stay. Yank them out!”
• “Okay, let’s practice the Rhyme Time for this lesson to help us remember it:”

My heart is the garden
Where God plants His seeds.
We tend it together
And pull all the weeds!
